World Premiere

March 30—April 2, 2011
Wednesday—Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 2pm & 8pm

Inspired by Robert Altman’s 1977 film, 3 WOMEN is a dreamlike investigation of personality and identity through the perspective of three women in a dusty California town. This atmospheric, character-driven piece combines video, sound, and movement to create an uncanny world, invoking both humor and terror, to tell the story of lost souls in the process of reinvention.

By Sophie Treadwell
Directed by Jess K Smith

Based on the legendary New York court trial of Ruth Snyder in 1927, Sophie Treadwell’s 1928 Expressionist play uncovers the life of a woman who must choose between fulfilling the world’s mechanized expectations and abandoning convention in order to live freely, whatever the costs. Now in 2011, this imaginative production uses aerial choreography and live music with an ensemble cast to illustrate with stunning theatricality the tension between social suffocation and independent breath.
